North Korean actors linked to the Lazarus ecosystem have shifted from destructive and SWIFT-focused operations toward large cryptocurrency thefts that target signing authority, employees, wallet providers, and operational infrastructure. The article highlights the $620 million Ronin theft, the $308 million DMM Bitcoin compromise, and the $1.5 billion Bybit attack, which the FBI attributed to TraderTraitor and which relied on a compromised Safe developer environment rather than a smart-contract flaw. Chainalysis estimates at least $6.75 billion was stolen by North Korean actors from 2017 through 2025, while the proceeds are laundered through token swaps, wallet fragmentation, chain-hopping, and mixers.
