2023-06-12 • Sanctions Screening & Hops in Crypto Transactions: Ensuring Detection of Sanctions Risks

Bithumb is a South Korean cryptocurrency exchange that was robbed of cryptoassets in June 2018 in an incident attributed to North Korea's Lazarus Group. The stolen funds were laundered through a peeling chain spanning dozens of intermediary wallets before reaching a Russia-based exchange, an effort intended to obscure their origin and frustrate sanctions screening. The incident is a notable example of Lazarus combining exchange theft with long, multi-hop laundering rather than moving proceeds directly to a final cash-out service.
