Operation GoldenAxe was a North Korea-suspected campaign active from June 2016 to May 2017 against more than ten South Korean organizations in diplomacy, aerospace, unification, parliamentary affairs, labor, and finance. The operators compromised comparatively weak association websites and abused ActiveX components from widely deployed domestic software, including payment, authentication, encryption, reporting, webmail, and groupware products. They exploited previously unpatched vulnerabilities and limited malware delivery to short windows or selected visitors, helping the operation evade detection while reaching security agencies and large companies.
