Incident/Operation

2026-07-17 • Major Blockchain Firm Consensys Accidentally Hired a North Korean Hacker

MetaMask is a cryptocurrency wallet platform developed by Consensys, not an operation or malware family. In March and April 2026, a consultant persona later linked internally to North Korea gained roughly one month of authorized access to Consensys and contributed to core MetaMask code, mobile wallet components, and payment-conversion features through a third-party staffing relationship. Consensys terminated the access, paused releases, notified law enforcement, and reported finding no theft of assets or data, malicious code deployment, or impact on user security.
