North Korean operatives use stolen or synthetic identities, AI assistance, domestic facilitators, VPNs, and laptop farms to obtain legitimate remote-work access inside companies and government agencies. A joint BCA LTD, NorthScan, and ANY.RUN investigation observed Famous Chollima personnel managing candidate pipelines, sharing infrastructure, and trying to place networks of fraudulent developers inside a simulated Web3 company. Candidate submissions can also stage malware such as OtterCookie, InvisibleFerret, and PyLangGhost RAT, while payroll may be diverted through mule accounts or cryptocurrency wallets. Recommended controls combine independent identity verification, sandboxing of applicant files and links, payroll-owner validation, and monitoring of IP, User-Agent, geolocation, proxy, and VPN discrepancies.
